The supreme spiritual master Kṛṣṇa, Parabrahman, can the Supreme Lord not award liberation? Why go to another place for liberation . . . (indistinct) . . . you want liberation, you take, you want enjoyment, you take, and if you want mystic perfections, take that and if you want devotional service, then do that. So it is appropriate for everyone to take shelter of the Supreme Lord, Kṛṣṇa. That is the injunction of the scriptures.
- akāmaḥ sarva-kāmo vā
- mokṣa-kāma udāra-dhīḥ
- tīvreṇa bhakti-yogena
- yajeta puruṣaṁ param
- (SB 2.3.10)
So the purpose of this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement which we have started is, if you have some material desires in your heart . . . (indistinct) . . . catur-vidhā bhajante māṁ janāḥ su-kṛtino (BG 7.16), ārto arthārthī jñānī jijñāsur, jñānī also seeks liberation from the Lord, jijñāsu wants to understand the Lord . . . (indistinct) . . . arthārthī he also seeks from the Lord, they are all sukṛtivan, sukṛti one whose background is pious, he approaches the Lord. The fact that one approaches the Lord, indicates . . . (indistinct) . . . but he is not a pure devotee. Pure devotee is one who never asks anything from the Lord. He is a pure devotee. Just like Caitanya Mahaprabhu has taught us, na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye (CC Antya 20.29, Śikṣāṣṭaka 4). He doesn't want anything. Ordinary persons in this material world have these desires, they want wealth, many followers who surround them at all times . . . (indistinct) . . . dhanaṁ janaṁ and sundarī, and beautiful lady. Caitanya Mahaprabhu denied all these. Na dhanaṁ na janaṁ na sundarīṁ kavitāṁ vā jagad-īśa kāmaye. Then what do You want? mama janmani janmanīśvare, I don't want liberation also. If one is liberated then how will he take birth? So I don't want liberation also. What do you want? Mama janmani janmanīśvare bhavatād bhaktir ahaitukī tvayi (CC Antya 20.29, Śikṣāṣṭaka 4). Only devotional service.
So the Bhagavad-gītā is for a genuine devotee, not for learned scholar, philosophical speculator, or yogi. They will not be able to understand it. So as the Lord has stated in the beginning itself, and in another place He has said, this is not for everyone. The Lord states, imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ (BG 4.2), rājarṣi, he is a king and at the same time a sage too. He will understand. He also states:
- sa kāleneha mahatā
- yogo naṣṭaḥ paran-tapa
- evaṁ paramparā-prāptam
- imaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ
- (BG 4.2)
The rājarṣis understand this.
- imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ
- proktavān aham avyayam
- vivasvān manave prāha
- manur ikṣvākave 'bravīt
- (BG 4.1)
Evaṁ rājarṣayo viduḥ, so this is not for the scholar, speculator. Big big rājarṣis like Mahārāja Rsabhadeva, Prahlada Mahārāja, Janak Mahārāja, ? Mahārāja, Pariksit Mahārāja, Dhruv Mahārāja, all big big kings . . . (indistinct) . . . although ksatriya, Ambarisa Mahārāja, big big kings. It is stated in the Bhagavatam, it is there in the history that there are many great rājarṣis. They understand the essence of the Bhagavad-gītā. It is not meant for everyone. And sa kāleneha mahatā yogo naṣṭaḥ paran-tapa, why was it destroyed? Eight thousand years ago the Lord was Himself speaking the Bhagavad-gītā, it was destroyed at that time. Why? The disciplic succession was destroyed. That is why the Lord states that the ancient yoga, it is not that I am creating one now and speaking to you now, no. I am speaking this to you only. Why are you speaking to me only? I am not a brahmana, a Vedantist, I am a king, come here to fight . . . (indistinct) . . . . bhakto 'si (BG 4.3), that is why one is not qualified to hear the Bhagavad-gītā 'till he becomes a devotee . . . (indistinct) . . . he should be able to understand. So that qualification. Did Kṛṣṇa not find anyone else so speak the Bhagavad-gītā to? No. Bhakto 'si, priyo 'si, one must be dear to the Lord and one must be a devotee of the Lord, this scripture is for the devotee. If the philosophical speculator has the association of a devotee only then can he understand. Otherwise he cannot understand.
What we mean to say that if you are all very much desirous that the Bhagavad-gītā be widely preached, and this must be done otherwise it is not a human society. The Lord descends Himself, yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati (BG 4.7), so nowadays in the human society, it is Kali-yuga, this is not human society. Mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ (SB 1.1.10), everyone is slow, otherwise bad. They are slow. What is the purpose of human life? Athāto brahma-jijñāsā, to inquire into the Absolute Truth. This is the purpose of human life. But who bothers to do this? We have got this human form of life, we must have knowledge of the Absolute Truth. No, no need! Here and there nonsensically get entangled. That is why it is said in Kali-yuga mandāḥ alpa āyu, prāyeṇālpāyuṣaḥ kalāv asmin yuge janāḥ (SB 1.1.10), all of them are short lived. In the Satya-yuga one used to live for 100000 years, then it became 10000 years, then after that it became 1000 years, and now it is 100 and that too is not completed. He goes by 50, 60. It is stated in the Bhagavatam . . . (indistinct)
So prāyeṇālpāyuṣaḥ, one must make his human life successful in which the span of life is very limited, and on top of that one is mandāḥ slow, oh! let me see in the old age, knowledge of the Absolute Truth! kaumāra ācaret prājño dharmān bhāgavatān iha (SB 7.6.1). Effort is not possible, mandāḥ, and even if it is there then sumanda-matayo, every one has made up his own path. And this is accepted nowadays. Whatever paths are there today, do whatever you want. And manda-matayo and manda-bhāgyā unfortunate. They are unfortunate because they have got this human form of life for attaining knowledge of the Absolute Truth, the Supreme Lord, the Supersoul but they are living the life dogs and hogs. They are so unfortunate, manda-matayo. And see it in this light, nowadays in Kali-yuga almost the four things you need for this body, āhāra-nidra-bhaya-maithuna - food, sleep, defence and sex, even that is not attainable. The animals get it, the birds get it but human beings don't get it. There is so much immorality. Now we have eaten this, evening what we will eat no certainty. And marriages do not take place ordinarily now. In western countries it does not take place at all . . . (indistinct) . . . āhāra nidra, there is no place to sleep even. Ahāra-nidra-bhaya-maithuna, defence, bhaya, one is all the time fearful . . . (indistinct) . . . who will kick me now . . . (indistinct) . . . perpetually, sadā samudvigna-dhiyām (SB 7.5.5), perpetually. upadrutāḥ, this is our position in Kali-yuga, alpa āyu, I don't understand anything about the Lord, mandāḥ, no effort in this direction, they have their own path, yato mat tato path, and he is unfortunate and he is disturbed. This is the situation.
Therefore Caitanya Mahaprabhu started this sankirtana movement, that,
- harer nāma harer nāma
- harer nāmaiva kevalam
- kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva
This is the statement from the scriptures, this is not manufactured by Caitanya Mahaprabhu. This is stated in the Brahmavaivarta Purana that in Kali-yuga, and the Bhagavatam also states this, Sukadev Goswami tells Pariksit Mahārāja that we know there a many faults in this Kali-yuga. The symptoms of Kali-yuga are stated in the Twelfth Canto. We see this actually happening, svīkāra eva codvāhe (SB 12.2.5) in Kali-yuga there will be marriage. Man and woman agree that we will live together for two or three years . . . (indistinct) . . . svīkāra eva codvāhe So the marriage happens on that condition. It is registered that for three four years we will live together as husband and wife. Thats all, that is marriage . . . (indistinct) . . . svīkāra eva codvāhe. dampatye ratim eva hi (SB 12.2.3), the relationship between man and woman will continue as long as sex is involved. And if there is any disturbance in that, then divorce. All this is stated. lavanyam kesa-dharanam (SB 12.2.6) See nowadays boys maintain long hair because they think that by keeping long hair they become very attractive . . . (indistinct) . . . lavanyam kesa-dharanam. vipratve sutram eva hi (SB 12.2.3) if one wears a two paisa sacred thread, he becomes a brahmana. All this can be seen, faults, faults and only faults.
Therefore the scriptures say that Kali-yuga is an ocean of faults. There is one assurance which Sukadev Goswami told Pariksit Mahārāja, that kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ (SB 12.3.51), there is one great quality. What is that? Kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya mukta-saṅgaḥ paraṁ vrajet (SB 12.3.51), just chant the names of Kṛṣṇa, and you will be liberated. See as proof, all these European, American boys who are with us, they have no background, they have not taken birth in the family of a brahmana, and neither . . . (indistinct) . . . nothing like that. They are all meat, fish eaters, drinking liquor, illicit connection with women, all this . . . (indistinct) . . . why? What is the reason? Kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya (SB 12.3.51), the only reason. This is the injunction of the scriptures. This is the verifiable proof. If you want to preach Bhagavad-gītā then this is the injunction of the scriptures. Just like the Lord Himself says, satataṁ kīrtayanto māṁ yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ (BG 9.14). Caitanya Mahaprabhu says, harer nāma harer nāma harer nāmaiva kevalam. Bhagavatam says, kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya mukta-saṅgaḥ, there is . . . (indistinct) . . . in this and there is no difficulty in doing this also. This will happen over time. We are all here, preachers of the Bhagavad-gītā, why don't we . . . (indistinct) . . .
