It is said sometimes the great sage Viswamitra had to live on the flesh of dogs in some extra ordinary dangerous position. In cases of emergency they may be allowed to live on the flesh of animals of all description but that does not mean that there shall be regular slaughter houses to feed the animal eaters and the system be encouraged by the state. Nobody should try to live on flesh in ordinary times simply for the sake of palate. If anybody does so the king or the executive head must punish such animal eaters for gross enjoyment. #$p#There are regular scriptural injunctions for different person engaged in different occupational duties and one's who follows them is called Swadharmanistha or faithful in one's prescribed duties. In the Bhagwat Geeta also (B.G. 18/48) it is advised that one may not give up his occupational prescribed duties even they are not always flawless. Such Swadharama might be violated in cases of emergency being forced by circumstances but they cannot be violated in ordinary course of time. The state executive head is to see that such Swadharma is not changed by the follower whatever he may be and give all protection to such follower of Swadharma. The violater is subject to punishment in terms of Shastra and it is the duty of the King to keen vigilance in this matter of strictly following one's occupational duty as prescribed in the Scripture. #/div# #/div# please wait#div class="mw-parser-output"##p class="mw-empty-elt"# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TEXT_16"#TEXT 16#/span##/h4# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#rājño hi paramo dharmaḥ#/dd# #dd#sva-dharma-sthānupālanam#/dd# #dd#śāsato 'nyān yathā-śāstram#/dd# #dd#anāpady utpathān iha#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=rājñaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#rājñaḥ#/i# — of the king or the executive head; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=hi&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#hi#/i# — certainly; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=paramaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#paramaḥ#/i# — supreme; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dharmaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dharmaḥ#/i# — occupational duty; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sva&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sva-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dharma&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dharma-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=stha&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#stha#/i# — one who is faithful to his prescribed duty; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=anupālanam&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#anupālanam#/i# — giving protection always; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=śāsataḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#śāsataḥ#/i# — while ruling; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=anyān&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#anyān#/i# — others; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yathā&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yathā#/i# — according to; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=śāstram&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#śāstram#/i# — rulings of scriptures; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=anāpadi&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#anāpadi#/i# — without danger; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=utpathān&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#utpathān#/i# — persons going astray; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=iha&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#iha#/i# — as a matter of fact. #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# The supreme duty of the ruling king is to give all protection to law-abiding persons and to chastise those who stray from the ordinances of the scriptures in ordinary times, when there is no emergency. #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="PURPORT"#PURPORT#/span##/h4# #div class="purport"# In the scriptures there is mention of #i#āpad-dharma#/i#, or occupational duty at times of extraordinary happenings.
