Since human life is not meant for our enjoying sense gratification like the animals, the four orders of human life are so arranged that one may become perfect in spiritual life. The #i#brahmacārīs#/i#, or students under the care of a bona fide spiritual master, control the mind by abstaining from sense gratification. They are referred to in this verse as sacrificing the hearing process and the senses in the fire of the controlled mind. A #i#brahmacārī#/i# hears only words concerning Kṛṣṇa consciousness; hearing is the basic principle for understanding, and therefore the pure #i#brahmacārī#/i# engages fully in #i#harer nāmānukīrtanam-#/i#chanting and hearing the glories of the Lord. He restrains himself from the vibrations of material sounds, and his hearing is engaged in the transcendental sound vibration of Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa. Similarly, the householders, who have some license for sense gratification, perform such acts with great restraint. Sex life, intoxication and meat eating are general tendencies of human society, but a regulated householder does not indulge in unrestricted sex life and other sense gratifications. Marriage on principles of religious life is therefore current in all civilized human society because that is the way for restricted sex life. This restricted, unattached sex life is also a kind of #i#yajña#/i# because the restricted householder sacrifices his general tendency toward sense gratification for higher transcendental life. #/p# #/div# #/div# please wait#div class="mw-parser-output"# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TEXT_26"#TEXT 26#/span##/h4# #div class="devanagari"# #dl##dd#श्रोत्रादीनीन्द्रियाण्यन्ये संयमाग्निषु जुह्वति ।#/dd# #dd#शब्दादीन्विषयानन्य इन्द्रियाग्निषु जुह्वति ॥२६॥#/dd##/dl# #/div# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#śrotrādīnīndriyāṇy anye#/dd# #dd#saṁyamāgniṣu juhvati#/dd# #dd#śabdādīn viṣayān anya#/dd# #dd#indriyāgniṣu juhvati#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #p##i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=śrotra&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#śrotra-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ādīni&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ādīni#/i# — such as the hearing process; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=indriyāṇi&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#indriyāṇi#/i# — senses; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=anye&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#anye#/i# — others; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=saṁyama&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#saṁyama#/i# — of restraint; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=agniṣu&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#agniṣu#/i# — in the fires; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=juhvati&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#juhvati#/i# — offer; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=śabda&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#śabda-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ādīn&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ādīn#/i# — sound vibration, etc.; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=viṣayān&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#viṣayān#/i# — objects of sense gratification; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=anye&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#anye#/i# — others; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=indriya&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#indriya#/i# — of the sense organs; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=agniṣu&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#agniṣu#/i# — in the fires; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=juhvati&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#juhvati#/i# — they sacrifice. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# #p#Some [the unadulterated brahmacārīs] sacrifice the hearing process and the senses in the fire of mental control, and others [the regulated householders] sacrifice the objects of the senses in the fire of the senses. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="PURPORT"#PURPORT#/span##/h4# #div class="purport"# #p#The members of the four divisions of human life, namely the #i#brahmacārī#/i#, the #i#gṛhastha#/i#, the #i#vānaprastha#/i# and the #i#sannyāsī#/i#, are all meant to become perfect #i#yogīs#/i# or transcendentalists.
