At the present moment in Kali-yuga there are many false meditators who concoct some imaginary form and try to meditate upon it. It has become fashionable to meditate, but people know nothing about the object of meditation. That is explained here. Yad dhyāyato viṣṇum. One has to meditate upon Lord Viṣṇu or Lord Kṛṣṇa. Without referring to the śāstras, so-called meditators aim at impersonal objects. Lord Kṛṣṇa has condemned them in Bhagavad-gītā (12.5): #dl##dd#kleśo 'dhikataras teṣām#/dd##/dl# avyaktāsakta-cetasām #dl##dd#avyaktā hi gatir duḥkhaṁ#/dd# #dd#dehavadbhir avāpyate#/dd##/dl# "For those whose minds are attached to the unmanifested, impersonal feature of the Supreme, advancement is very troublesome. To make progress in that discipline is always difficult for those who are embodied." #$p#Not knowing how to meditate, foolish people simply suffer, and there is no benefit derived from their spiritual activities. The same reference can be found in the following verse from the Viṣṇu Purāṇa (6.2.17), Padma Purāṇa (Uttara-khaṇḍa 72.25) and Bṛhan-nāradīya Purāṇa (38.97). #/div# #/div# please wait#div class="mw-parser-output"# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TEXT_345"#TEXT 345#/span##/h4# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#kṛte yad dhyāyato viṣṇuṁ#/dd# #dd#tretāyāṁ yajato makhaiḥ#/dd# #dd#dvāpare paricaryāyāṁ#/dd# #dd#kalau tad dhari-kīrtanāt#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=kṛte&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#kṛte#/i# — in Satya-yuga; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yat&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yat#/i# — which; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dhyāyataḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dhyāyataḥ#/i# — from meditation; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=viṣṇum&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#viṣṇum#/i# — on Lord Viṣṇu; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=tretāyām&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#tretāyām#/i# — in Tretā-yuga; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yajataḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yajataḥ#/i# — from worshiping; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=makhaiḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#makhaiḥ#/i# — by performing sacrifices; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dvāpare&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dvāpare#/i# — in the Age of Dvāpara; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=paricaryāyām&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#paricaryāyām#/i# — by worshiping the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=kalau&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#kalau#/i# — in the Age of Kali; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=tat&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#tat#/i# — that same result (can be achieved); #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=hari&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#hari-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=kīrtanāt&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#kīrtanāt#/i# — simply by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa #i#mahā-mantra#/i#. #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# “‘Whatever result was obtained in Satya-yuga by meditating on Viṣṇu, in Tretā-yuga by performing sacrifices and in Dvāpara-yuga by serving the Lord’s lotus feet can also be obtained in Kali-yuga simply by chanting the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra.’ #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="PURPORT"#PURPORT#/span##/h4# #div class="purport"# This verse is quoted from #i#Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam#/i# (SB 12.3.52).
