His symptoms are described here: a #i#mahātmā#/i# is always engaged in chanting the glories of the Supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Personality of Godhead. He has no other business. He is always engaged in the glorification of the Lord. In other words, he is not an impersonalist. When the question of glorification is there, one has to glorify the Supreme Lord, praising His holy name, His eternal form, His transcendental qualities and His uncommon pastimes. One has to glorify all these things; therefore a #i#mahātmā#/i# is attached to the Supreme Personality of Godhead. #$p#One who is attached to the impersonal feature of the Supreme Lord, the #i#brahmajyoti#/i#, is not described as #i#mahātmā#/i# in the #i#Bhagavad-gītā#/i#. He is described in a different way in the next verse. The #i#mahātmā#/i# is always engaged in different activities of devotional service, as described in the #i#Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam#/i#, hearing and chanting about Viṣṇu, not a demigod or human being. That is devotion: #i#śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ, smaraṇam#/i#, and remembering Him. Such a #i#mahātmā#/i# has firm determination to achieve at the ultimate end the association of the Supreme Lord in any one of the five transcendental #i#rasas#/i#. To achieve that success, he engages all activities-mental, bodily and vocal, everything-in the service of the Supreme Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa. That is called full Kṛṣṇa consciousness. #$p#In devotional service there are certain activities which are called determined, such as fasting on certain days, like the eleventh day of the moon, #i#Ekādaśī#/i#, and on the appearance day of the Lord, etc. All these rules and regulations are offered by the great #i#ācāryas#/i# for those who are actually interested in getting admission into the association of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the transcendental world. The #i#mahātmās#/i#, great souls, strictly observe all these rules and regulations, and therefore they are sure to achieve the desired result. #$p#As described in the second verse of this chapter, this devotional service is not only easy, but it can be performed in a happy mood. One does not need to undergo any severe penance and austerity. He can live this life in devotional service, guided by an expert spiritual master, and in any position, either as a householder or a #i#sannyāsī#/i#, or a #i#brahmacārī#/i#; in any position and anywhere in the world, he can perform this devotional service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead and thus become actually #i#mahātmā#/i#, a great soul. #/dd##/dl# #/div# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#satataṁ kīrtayanto māṁ#/dd# #dd#yatantaś ca dṛḍha-vratāḥ#/dd# #dd#namasyantaś ca māṁ bhaktyā#/dd# #dd#nitya-yuktā upāsate#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #p##i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=satatam&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#satatam#/i# — always; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=kīrtayantaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#kīrtayantaḥ#/i# — chanting; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=mām&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#mām#/i# — about Me; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yatantaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yatantaḥ#/i# — fully endeavoring; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ca&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ca#/i# — also; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dṛḍha&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dṛḍha-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=vratāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#vratāḥ#/i# — with determination; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=namasyantaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#namasyantaḥ#/i# — offering obeisances; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ca&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ca#/i# — and; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=mām&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#mām#/i# — Me; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=bhaktyā&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#bhaktyā#/i# — in devotion; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=nitya&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#nitya-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yuktāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yuktāḥ#/i# — perpetually engaged; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=upāsate&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#upāsate#/i# — worship. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# #p#Always chanting My glories, endeavoring with great determination, bowing down before Me, these great souls perpetually worship Me with devotion. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="PURPORT"#PURPORT#/span##/h4# #div class="purport"# #p#The #i#mahātmā#/i# cannot be manufactured by rubber-stamping an ordinary man.
