Vibhāvarī Śeṣa - From Kalyāṇa Kalpataru, "The Desire Tree of Auspiciousness" by Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura

Song - Gold Series CD 7 Track 1

(1)

vibhāvarī śeṣa, āloka-praveśa,
nidrā chāri' uṭho jīva
bolo hari hari, mukunda murāri,
rāma kṛṣṇa hayagrīva

The night has come to an end and the light of dawn is entering. O jīva soul, arise and give up your sleep. Chant the holy names of Lord Hari, who is the giver of liberation; the enemy of the Mura demon; the supreme enjoyer; the all-attractive one; and the horse-headed incarnation, Hayagrīva.

(2)

nṛsiṁha vāmana, śrī-madhusūdana,
brajendra-nandana śyāma
pūtanā-ghātana, kaiṭabha-śātana,
jaya dāśarathi-rāma

Lord Hari (Kṛṣṇa) incarnated as the half-man, half-lion, Nṛsiṁha. He appeared as a dwarf brāhmaṇa named Upendra and is the killer of the Madhu demon. He is the beloved son of the King of Vraja, Nanda Mahārāja, and is blackish in complexion. He is the slayer of the Pūtanā witch and the destroyer of the demon Kaiṭabha. All glories to Lord Hari, who appeared as Lord Rāma, the son of King Daśaratha.

(3)

yaśodā dulāla, govinda-gopāla,
vṛndāvana purandara
gopī-priya-jana, rādhikā-ramaṇa,
bhuvana -sundara-bara

He is the darling of Mother Yaśodā; the giver of pleasure to the cows, land, and spiritual senses; and the protector of the cows. He is the Lord of the Vṛndāvana forest; the gopīs' beloved; the lover of Rādhikā; and the most beautiful personality in all the worlds.

(4)

rāvāṇāntakara, mākhana-taskara,
gopī-jana-vastra-hārī
brajera rākhāla, gopa-vṛnda-pāla,
citta-hārī baṁśī-dhārī

As Rāmacandra He brought about the end of the demoniac King Rāvaṇa; as Kṛṣṇa He stole the older gopīs' butter; He stole the younger gopīs' clothes while they were bathing in the Yamunā. He is a cowherd boy of Vraja and the protector of the cowherd boys. He steals the hearts of all and always holds a flute.

(5)

yogīndra-bandana, śrī-nanda-nandana,
braja-jana-bhaya-hārī
navīna nīrada, rūpa manohara,
mohana-baṁśī-bihārī

Lord Kṛṣṇa is worshiped by the best of yogīs and is the son of Nanda. He removes all the fears of the inhabitants of Vraja. He is the color of a fresh rain cloud, and His form is enchanting. When He wanders about, playing His flute, He looks very charming.

(6)

yaśodā-nandana, kaṁsa-nisūdana,
nikuñja-rāsa-vilāsī
kadamba-kānana, rāsa-parāyaṇa,
bṛnda-vipina-nivāsī

He is the son of Yaśodā and the killer of King Kaṁsa, and He sports in the rāsa dance among the groves of Vraja. Kṛṣṇa engages in this rāsa dance underneath the kadamba trees, and He resides in the forest of Vṛndāvana.

(7)

ānanda-vardhana, prema-niketana,
phula-śara-jojaka kāma
gopāṅganā-gaṇa, citta-vinodana,
samasta-guṇa-gaṇa-dhāma

He increases the ecstasy of His devotees. He is the reservoir of all love and is the transcendental Cupid who uses His flowered arrows to increase the loving desires of the gopīs. He is the pleasure of the gopīs' hearts and the abode of all wonderful qualities.

(8)

jāmuna-jīvana, keli-parāyaṇa,
mānasa-candra-cakora
nāma-sudhā-rasa, gāo kṛṣṇa-jaśa
rākho vacana mana mora

Lord Kṛṣṇa is the life of the River Yamunā. He is always absorbed in amorous pastimes, and He is the moon of the gopīs' minds, which are like the cakora birds that subsist only upon moonlight. O mind, obey these words of mine and sing the glories of Śrī Kṛṣṇa in the form of these holy names, which are full of nectarean mellows.

Purport - Gold Series CD 7 Track 2 clip 1

This is a song sung by Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura. He's asking everyone to rise early in the morning. Vibhāvarī śeṣa, the night is over, āloka-praveśa, the glimpses of sunlight are there, now you get up. Nidrā chāri uṭha jīva, don't sleep any more. That is the Vedic life. One should not sleep after sunrise. He must rise before sunrise. That is healthy life also. So just instantly after rising from the bed, one should chant the holy names of the Lord. Here it is suggested, bolo hari hari, now you chant Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, mukunda murāri, Kṛṣṇa's different names.

Mukunda means one who gives liberation. Murari, murari means Kṛṣṇa the enemy of the demon of the name Mura. Rāma is another name, celebrated, Rāma, Kṛṣṇa. Hayagrīva, Hayagrīva is another incarnation of Kṛṣṇa. Similarly Nṛsiṁha, Nara-hari, half-lion, half-man, Nṛsiṁha-deva. Vāmana incarnation, nṛsiṁha vāmana, śri-madhusūdana. Madhusūdana, there was a demon Madhu, and Kaiṭabha, they came to swallow up Brahmā after his creation, so they were killed. Therefore Kṛṣṇa's another name is Madhusūdana. Madhusūdana name is found in Bhagavad-gītā in various places. Madhusūdana means the enemy of Madhu. Kṛṣṇa is both friend and enemy. He is actually friend of everyone, but He becomes enemy-like for one who treats Kṛṣṇa as enemy. He is nobody's enemy, but if anyone wants to see Him as enemy, He appears like enemy. That is the absolute. The demons, they want to see Kṛṣṇa as enemy, so accepting the desire of the demons, He appears before him as enemy, kills him, and gives him liberation. That is absolute pastime of Kṛṣṇa, madhusūdana brajendra-nandana śyāma. Actually God has no name, but His names are selected according to His pastime. Just like this Madhusūdana name is given to Him because He killed the Madhu demon.

Similarly, He is known as brajendra-nandana, the son of vraja, vṛndāvana, because He appeared as the son of Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja, brajendra-nandana. Śyāma, His bodily hue is blackish, therefore He is called Śyāmasundara. Pūtanā-ghātana, kaiṭabha-śātana, jaya dāśarathi-rāma. So because He killed the demon Pūtanā, His name is pūtanā-ghātana. Ghātana means killer. Kaitabha-śātana, and He is chastiser of all kinds of dangers. Jaya-dāśarathi-rāma. In connection of His killing the Rāvaṇa, He is glorified, jaya dāśarathi. Dāśarathi means: His father name was Dāśaratha, so He is dāśarathi, dāśarathi-rāma. Yaśodā-dulāla govinda-gopāla. Yaśodā-dulāla means pet son of Mother Yaśodā. Govinda-gopāla, and He is cowherds boy, Govinda, giving pleasure to the cow. Vṛndāvana-purandara, the chief of the Vṛndāvana land. He is the center of attraction for everyone in Vṛndāvana. Rāvāṇāntakara gopī-priya-jana, He is very favorable to the gopīs, gopī-priya. Rādhikā-ramaṇa, and He always enjoys the company of Rādhārāṇī, therefore His name is Rādhikā-ramaṇa. Bhuvana-sundara-bara. So He attracted so many gopīs, that means He is attractive to the whole universe. Nobody is more attractive than Kṛṣṇa within this universe, or within anywhere, therefore He is called bhuvana-sundara-bara. Bara means the chief. Rāvāṇāntakara, mākhana-taskara, gopī-jana-vastra-hari.

Purport (continued) - Gold Series CD 7 Track 2 clip 2

As Rāma, when He appeared as Lord Rāmacandra, He killed Rāvaṇa, rāvāṇāntakara. Mākhana-taskara, and in Vṛndāvana He is known as the butter thief. In His childhood pastime, He used to steal butter from the pots of the gopīs. That was His pleasure pastime, therefore He is called mākhana-taskara, mākhanacora. Gopī-jana-vastra-hari, and He also stole the garments of the gopīs, while they were taking bath. This is very confidential. Actually the gopīs wanted Kṛṣṇa. They prayed to Kātyāyani-devī, goddess Kātyāyani, because He was attractive to all the girls of His age, so they wanted Kṛṣṇa as husband. So, superficially, Kṛṣṇa was of the same age, and how He could be husband for all the gopīs? But He accepted. Because the gopīs wanted to become wives of Kṛṣṇa, therefore Kṛṣṇa accepted their proposal. In order to show them the mercy, He stole the garments, because a husband can take away the covering of wife's bodily garment. Nobody (else) can touch it. So that is the purpose, but people do not know. Therefore Kṛṣṇa-lila has to be heard from a realized soul, or this portion should be avoided. Otherwise we shall misunderstand that Kṛṣṇa took away the garments, and He was very much fallen, woman-hunter, like that. Not that. He is Supreme Lord. He fulfills the desire of every devotee. So Kṛṣṇa had no business to see the gopīs naked, but because they wanted to become wife, so He fulfilled their desire. A token, "Yes, I am your husband, I have taken your garment. Now you take your garment and go home." Therefore He is known as gopī-jana-vastra-hari. Brajera rākhāla, gopa-vṛnda-pāla, citta-hārī vaṁśī-dhārī. Brajera-rākhāla, the cowherd boy in Vṛndāvana, and gopa-vṛnda-pāla, His object was how to satisfy the cowherds men, including His father, uncle, they were all keeping cows, to please them. So He's gopa-vṛnda-pāla. Citta-hārī vaṁśī-dhārī, and when He was playing the flute, it was taking the heart of everyone, citta-hārī. He was taking away the heart of everyone. Yogīndra-vandana, in spite of Kṛṣṇa's playing as a small cowherd boy in Vṛndāvana, just like the village boy making jokes with His friends, but still, He is yogīndra-vandana. Yogīndra means greatest yogi, mystic. Dhyānāvasthita-tad-gatena manasā paśyanti yaṁ yoginaḥ (SB 12.13.1). The yoginaḥ, the meditation, whom they are trying to find out? This Kṛṣṇa. They are trying to find out Kṛṣṇa. So unless they come to the point of concentrating their mind on Kṛṣṇa, their yogic principle, or mystic power, is baffled. Yoginām api sarveṣāṁ mad-gata-antara (BG 6.47). Yogi, first-class yogi, must keep always Kṛṣṇa within his heart. That is perfection of yoga. Therefore it is called yogīndra-vandana, śrī-nanda-nandana, braja-jana-bhaya-hārī. Although He is worshiped by the great mystics, still He lives in Vṛndāvana as Son of Nanda Maharaja, and the residents of Vṛndāvana, they feel safe and sound under protection of Kṛṣṇa. Navīna nīrada, rūpa manohara, mohana-vaṁśī-vihārī. Navīna nīrada, nīrada means cloud, His complexion is just like new cloud. New cloud, blackish, rūpa. Still He is so beautiful. Generally black is not considered very beautiful within this material world, but because His body is transcendental, even He is blackish, He is the universally attractive. Rūpa manohara. Mohana-vaṁśī-vihārī, simply when He stands with His flute, He, even though He is blackish, He becomes so attractive to everyone. Yaśodā-nandana, kaṁsa-nisūdana, He is very much celebrated as the Son of Mother Yaśodā, He is the killer of Kaṁsa, and nikuñja-rāsa-vilāsī, and He used to dance, rasa dance, in the nikuñja, vaṁśī-vaṭa, nikuñja. Kadamba-kānana, rāsa-parāyaṇa, there are many kadamba trees. Kadamba is a kind of flower that is especially grown in Vṛndāvana, very fragrant and beautiful, solid flower, round. So Kadamba-kānana, He used to enjoy His rasa dance underneath the tree of this kadamba. Ānanda-vardhana prema-niketana, phula-śara-yojaka kāma. So He was exciting the lusty desires of the gopīs, and increasing their transcendental bliss. Ānanda-vardhana prema-niketana, because He is the reservoir of all pleasure. The gopīs used to come to enjoy because He is the reservoir of all pleasure. Just like we go to take water from a lake where there is water. Similarly, if we want actually blissful life, then we shall draw it from the reservoir of all pleasure, Kṛṣṇa. Ānanda-vardhana, that pleasure will increase. The material pleasure will decrease, you cannot enjoy for a long time, it will decrease, but spiritual pleasure, if you want to draw it from the reservoir of all pleasure, Kṛṣṇa, then it will increase. Your pleasure potency will increase, and you will get more and more pleasure. As you increase your pleasure potency, or desire, the supply is also incessant. There is no limit. Phula-śara-yojaka kāma, He is the transcendental cupid. Cupid, with his bows and arrow, he increases the lusty desires of the material world. Similarly in the spiritual world, He is the supreme cupid. He was increasing the lusty desires of the gopīs. They used to come there, and both of them, there was no decrease. They were increasing their desire, and Kṛṣṇa was supplying them, without any material concept of life. They were simply dancing, that's all. Gopāṅganā-gaṇa, citta-vinodana, samasta-guṇa-gaṇa-dhāma. He's especially attractive for the gopāṅganā. Gopāṅganā means the dancers of vraja-dhama. Gopāṅgaṇa-gaṇa, citta-vinodana, they were simply absorbed in Kṛṣṇa's thought. They were so much became attracted by, attached to Kṛṣṇa, they could not give up His existence of His form within the heart for a moment, citta-vinodana, He captured the heart of the gopī, citta-vinodana. Samasta-guṇa-gaṇa-dhāma, He is the reservoir of all transcendental qualities. Yamunā-jīvana, keli-parāyaṇa, mānasa-candra-cakora. Mānasa-candra-cakora, there is a bird which is known as cakora. He looks toward the moonshine. Similarly, He was the moon amongst the gopīs, and they were simply looking after Him. And He is the life of the river Yamunā, because He used to enjoy jumping over the river of Yamunā. Nāma-sudhā-rasa, gāo kṛṣṇa-yaśa, rākho vacana. So Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura is requesting everyone, "Now you chant all these different names of the Lord, and save me." Rākho vacana mano: "My dear mind, please keep my word. Don't refuse, go on chanting all these holy names of Kṛṣṇa."
