Jitendriya means one who has full control over the senses. The senses are active parts of the body and their activities cannot be stopped. The artificial means of yogic process to make the senses inactive has proved to be abject failure even in the case of great Yogis like Biswamitra Muni. Biswamitra Muni controlled the senses by yogic trance but when he happened to meet Menaka (heavenly society woman) he became a victim of sex and the artificial way of controlling senses failed. But in the case of a pure devotee the senses are not at all artificially stopped from doing anything but they are given different good engagements. As such the senses having been engaged in more attractive activities there is no chance of their being attracted by any other inferior engagements. In the Bhagwat Geeta it is said that the senses can only be controlled under circumstances of better engagements. Devotional service meanse purifying the senses or to engage them in the activities of devotional service. Devotional service is not inaction. Anything done in the service of the Lord becomes at once purified of its matetial nature. Material conception is due to ignorance only. There is nothing beyond Vasudeva. The Vasudeva conception gradually develops in the heart of the learned after a prolonged acceleration of the receptive organs. But the process ends in the knowledge of accepting Vasudeva as all in all. In the case of devotional service this very same method is accepted from the very beginning and by the Grace of the Lord all factual knowledge becomes revealed in the heart of a devotee on account of dictation of the Lord from within. Therefore controlling the senses by devotional service is the only and easiest means. #/div# #/div# please wait#div class="mw-parser-output"##p class="mw-empty-elt"# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TEXT_23"#TEXT 23#/span##/h4# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#sa vā ayaṁ yat padam atra sūrayo#/dd# #dd#jitendriyā nirjita-mātariśvanaḥ#/dd# #dd#paśyanti bhakty-utkalitāmalātmanā#/dd# #dd#nanv eṣa sattvaṁ parimārṣṭum arhati#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=saḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#saḥ#/i# — He; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=vai&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#vai#/i# — by providence; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ayam&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ayam#/i# — this; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yat&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yat#/i# — that which; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=padam&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#padam #a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=atra&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#atra#/i# — here is the same Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sūrayaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sūrayaḥ#/i# — great devotees; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=jita&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#jita-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=indriyāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#indriyāḥ#/i# — who have overcome the influence of the senses; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=nirjita&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#nirjita#/i# — thoroughly controlled; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=mātariśvanaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#mātariśvanaḥ#/i# — life; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=paśyanti&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#paśyanti#/i# — can see; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=bhakti&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#bhakti#/i# — by dint of devotional service; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=utkalita&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#utkalita#/i# — developed; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=amala&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#amala-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ātmanā&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ātmanā#/i# — those whose minds are thoroughly cleansed; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=nanu&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#nanu #a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=eṣaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#eṣaḥ#/i# — certainly by this only; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sattvam&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sattvam#/i# — existence; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=parimārṣṭum&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#parimārṣṭum#/i# — for purifying the mind completely; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=arhati&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#arhati#/i# — deserve. #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# Here is the same Supreme Personality of Godhead whose transcendental form is experienced by the great devotees who are completely cleansed of material consciousness by dint of rigid devotional service and full control of life and the senses.
