It is not possible for an ordinary man to leave home and go to a secluded place in the mountains or jungles to practice #i#yoga#/i# in this age of Kali. The present age is characterized by a bitter struggle for a life of short duration. People are not serious about self-realization even by simple, practical means, and what to speak of this difficult #i#yoga#/i# system, which regulates the mode of living, the manner of sitting, selection of place, and detachment of the mind from material engagements. As a practical man, Arjuna thought it was impossible to follow this system of #i#yoga#/i#, even though he was favorably endowed in many ways. He belonged to the royal family and was highly elevated in terms of numerous qualities; he was a great warrior, he had great longevity, and, above all, he was the most intimate friend of Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Five thousand years ago, Arjuna had much better facilities then we do now, yet he refused to accept this system of #i#yoga#/i#. In fact, we do not find any record in history of his practicing it at any time. Therefore this system must be considered generally impossible in this age of Kali. Of course it may be possible for some very few, rare men, but for the people in general it is an impossible proposal. If this were so five thousand years ago, then what of the present day? Those who are imitating this #i#yoga#/i# system in different so-called schools and societies, although complacent, are certainly wasting their time. They are completely in ignorance of the desired goal. #/dd##/dl# #/div# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#arjuna uvāca#/dd# #dd#yo 'yaṁ yogas tvayā proktaḥ#/dd# #dd#sāmyena madhusūdana#/dd# #dd#etasyāhaṁ na paśyāmi#/dd# #dd#cañcalatvāt sthitiṁ sthirām#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #p##i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=arjunaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#arjunaḥ #a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=uvāca&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#uvāca#/i# — Arjuna said; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yaḥ #a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ayam&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ayam#/i# — this system; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yogaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yogaḥ#/i# — mysticism; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=tvayā&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#tvayā#/i# — by You; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=proktaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#proktaḥ#/i# — described; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sāmyena&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sāmyena#/i# — generally; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=madhu&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#madhu-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sūdana&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sūdana#/i# — O killer of the demon Madhu; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=etasya&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#etasya#/i# — of this; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=aham&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#aham#/i# — I; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=na&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#na#/i# — do not; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=paśyāmi&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#paśyāmi#/i# — see; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=cañcalatvāt&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#cañcalatvāt#/i# — due to being restless; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sthitim&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sthitim#/i# — situation; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sthirām&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sthirām#/i# — stable. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# #p#Arjuna said:O Madhusūdana, the system of yoga which You have summarized appears impractical and unendurable to me, for the mind is restless and unsteady. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="PURPORT"#PURPORT#/span##/h4# #div class="purport"# #p#The system of mysticism described by Lord Kṛṣṇa to Arjuna beginning with the words #i#śucau deśe#/i# and ending with #i#yogī paramaḥ#/i# is here being rejected by Arjuna out of a feeling of inability.
