There are persons who are sacrificing their possessions in the form of various kinds of charities. In India, the rich mercantile community or princely orders open various kinds of charitable institutions like #i#dharmaśālā, anna-kṣetra, atithi-śālā, anathalaya, vidyāpīṭha#/i#, etc. In other countries, too, there are many hospitals, old age homes and similar charitable foundations meant for distributing food, education and medical treatment free to the poor. All these charitable activities are called #i#dravyamaya-yajña#/i#. There are others who, for higher elevation in life or for promotion to higher planets within the universe, voluntarily accept many kinds of austerities such as #i#candrāyana#/i# and #i#cāturmāsya#/i#. These processes entail severe vows for conducting life under certain rigid rules. For example, under the #i#cāturmāsya#/i# vow the candidate does not shave for four months during the year (July to October), he does not eat certain foods, does not eat twice in a day and does not leave home. Such sacrifice of the comforts of life is called #i#tapomaya-yajña#/i#. There are still others who engage themselves in different kinds of mystic #i#yogas#/i# like the Patañjali system (for merging into the existence of the Absolute), or #i#haṭha-yoga#/i# or #i#aṣṭāṅga-yoga#/i# (for particular perfections). And some travel to all the sanctified places of pilgrimage. All these practices are called #i#yoga-yajña#/i#, sacrifice for a certain type of perfection in the material world. There are others who engage themselves in the studies of different Vedic literatures, specifically the #i#Upaniṣads#/i# and #i#Vedānta-sūtras#/i#, or the #i#sāṅkhya#/i# philosophy. All of these are called #i#svādhyāya-yajña#/i#, or engagement in the sacrifice of studies. All these #i#yogīs#/i# are faithfully engaged in different types of sacrifice and are seeking a higher status of life. Kṛṣṇa consciousness, is, however, different from these because it is the direct service of the Supreme Lord. Kṛṣṇa consciousness cannot be attained by any one of the above-mentioned types of sacrifices but can be attained only by the mercy of the Lord and His bona fide devotee. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa consciousness is transcendental. #/p# #/div# #/div# please wait#div class="mw-parser-output"# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TEXT_28"#TEXT 28#/span##/h4# #div class="devanagari"# #dl##dd#द्रव्ययज्ञास्तपोयज्ञा योगयज्ञास्तथापरे ।#/dd# #dd#स्वाध्यायज्ञानयज्ञाश्च यतयः संशितव्रताः ॥२८॥#/dd##/dl# #/div# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#dravya-yajñās tapo-yajñā#/dd# #dd#yoga-yajñās tathāpare#/dd# #dd#svādhyāya-jñāna-yajñāś ca#/dd# #dd#yatayaḥ saṁśita-vratāḥ#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #p##i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dravya&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dravya-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yajñāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yajñāḥ#/i# — sacrificing one's possessions; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=tapaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#tapaḥ-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yajñāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yajñāḥ#/i# — sacrifice in austerities; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yoga&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yoga-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yajñāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yajñāḥ#/i# — sacrifice in eightfold mysticism; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=tathā&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#tathā#/i# — thus; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=apare&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#apare#/i# — others; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=svādhyāya&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#svādhyāya#/i# — sacrifice in the study of the #i#Vedas; #/i# #a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=jñāna&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#jñāna-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yajñāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yajñāḥ#i# — sacrifice in advancement of transcendental knowledge; #/i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=ca&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#ca#i# — also; #/i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=yatayaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#yatayaḥ#i# — enlightened persons; #/i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=saṁśita&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#saṁśita-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=vratāḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#vratāḥ#i# — taken to strict vows.#/i# #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# #p#Having accepted strict vows, some become enlightened by sacrificing their possessions, and others by performing severe austerities, by practicing the yoga of eightfold mysticism, or by studying the Vedas to advance in transcendental knowledge. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="PURPORT"#PURPORT#/span##/h4# #div class="purport"# #p#These sacrifices may be fitted into various divisions.
