Prescribed duties complement one's psychophysical condition, under the spell of the modes of material nature. Spiritual duties are as ordered by the spiritual master, for the transcendental service of Kṛṣṇa. But both materially or spiritually, one should stick to his prescribed duties even up to death, rather than imitate another's prescribed duties. Duties on the spiritual platform and duties on the material platform may be different, but the principle of following the authorized direction is always good for the performer. When one is under the spell of the modes of material nature, one should follow the prescribed rules for particular situations and should not imitate others. For example, a #i#brāhmaṇa#/i#, who is in the mode of goodness, is nonviolent, whereas a #i#kṣatriya#/i#, who is in the mode of passion, is allowed to be violent. As such, for a #i#kṣatriya#/i# it is better to be vanquished following the rules of violence than to imitate a #i#brāhmaṇa#/i# who follows the principles of nonviolence. Everyone has to cleanse his heart by a gradual process, not abruptly. However, when one transcends the modes of material nature and is fully situated in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, he can perform anything and everything under the direction of the bona fide spiritual master. In that complete stage of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the #i#kṣatriya#/i# may act as a #i#brāhmaṇa#/i#, or a #i#brāhmaṇa#/i# may act as a #i#kṣatriya#/i#. In the transcendental stage, the distinctions of the material world do not apply. For example, Viśvāmitra was originally a #i#kṣatriya#/i#, but later on he acted as a #i#brāhmaṇa#/i#, whereas Paraśurāma was a #i#brāhmaṇa#/i#, but later on he acted as a #i#kṣatriya#/i#. Being transcendentally situated, they could do so; but as long as one is on the material platform, he must perform his duties according to the modes of material nature. At the same time, he must have a full sense of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. #/p# #/div# #/div# please wait#div class="mw-parser-output"# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TEXT_35"#TEXT 35#/span##/h4# #div class="devanagari"# #dl##dd#श्रेयान्स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात्स्वनुष्ठितात् ।#/dd# #dd#स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः ॥३५॥#/dd##/dl# #/div# #div class="verse"# #dl##dd#śreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ#/dd# #dd#para-dharmāt sv-anuṣṭhitāt#/dd# #dd#sva-dharme nidhanaṁ śreyaḥ#/dd# #dd#para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ#/dd##/dl# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="SYNONYMS"#SYNONYMS#/span##/h4# #div class="synonyms"# #p##i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=śreyān&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#śreyān#/i# — far better; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sva&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sva-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dharmaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dharmaḥ#/i# — one's prescribed duties; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=viguṇaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#viguṇaḥ#/i# — even faulty; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=para&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#para-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dharmāt&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dharmāt#/i# — than duties mentioned for others; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=su&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#su-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=anuṣṭhitāt&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#anuṣṭhitāt#/i# — perfectly done; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=sva&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#sva-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dharme&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dharme#/i# — in one's prescribed duties; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=nidhanam&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#nidhanam#/i# — destruction; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=śreyaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#śreyaḥ#/i# — better; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=para&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#para-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=dharmaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#dharmaḥ#/i# — duties prescribed for others; #i##a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=bhaya&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#bhaya-#a target="_blank" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" class="external text" href="//vanipedia.org/wiki/Special:VaniSearch?s=āvahaḥ&tab=syno_o&ds=1"#āvahaḥ#/i# — dangerous. #/p# #/div# #h4##span class="mw-headline" id="TRANSLATION"#TRANSLATION#/span##/h4# #div class="translation"# #p#It is far better to discharge one's prescribed duties, even though faultily, than another's duties perfectly.
